Who’s coming to #HCbos? Talya Miron-Shatz

Hi, Talya! Please tell us a little about your day job.

You mean BOTH my day jobs… I have a dual-life, if you will, focusing both on academic research, and on applying scientific principles to promote health in my company. I am Associate Professor and founding director of the Center for Medical Decision Making at the Ono Academic College (just outside of Tel Aviv), and CEO of CureMyWay – a company that promotes behavior change towards better health.

What are you passionate about?

I came into medical decision making through teaching genetic cousenlors, sitting in on consultations, and seeing how poorly people understand the information they receive. Since then, I’ve been passionate, bordering on evangelical, about ensuring patient comprehension. But this is just the ground floor. Beyond that, motivation is key. This translates to everything – from the tiniest behavioral change (read my Psychology Today blog for my battle with flossing), to adherence to medication. To me, comprehension also mean treating patients as consumers – I’ve been teaching consumer behavior at Wharton, and very dedicated to the consumerism approach in healthcare. I suspect if you read my blog you’ll discover how deep I am into yoga, and how much I love my kids (though they repeatedly teach me the difficulty of introducing behavioral change).

What are you doing to “hack” health care?

I introduce patient empowerment through comprehension and motivation. My company is designing an incredibly cool platform for improving and maintaining health. This will serve consumers, as well as pharma companies, HMOs – the works. We were included in GEW 50 last year – so stay tuned!

Why are you attending HealthCamp Boston?

I’ll try (almost) anything once.

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

My session would be about ensuring patient knowledge, so that systems – from bloodwork results delivered by HMOs to anything your app can do for you – is easily comprehended. Another potential session would be on embedding motivation in anything health-related, making sure patients are engaged over time.

What kinds of people do you want to meet at HealthCamp?

I’m looking forward to meeting anyone who is passionate about health – because each person teaches me something that makes my platform better!

See you in Boston!

Adrian Gropper (web, twitter) is coming to HealthCamp Boston.

Adrian, please tell us a little about your day job.

What are you passionate about?

These include my state medical society, my state health information exchange, state-level health system legislation, Patient Privacy Rights, the Society for Participatory Medicine, VRM, CHC, NSTIC, and Direct and BlueButton-related standards groups.

Why are you attending HealthCamp Boston?

To stay in touch with the health innovation community.

Look Who’s Coming to #HCbos – Keith Boone aka @motorcycle_guy

Keith Boone aka @motorcycle_guy will be coming to HealthCamp Boston!

Keith, please tell us a little about your day job.

I’m a Standards Geek for GE Healthcare.  I represent the company to a number of different standards and related organizations, including HL7, IHE and the ONC S&I Framework projects (among others).  I also teach the standards internally and externally, and promote the use of these standards in the industry.

What are you passionate about?

I love my job.  Basically, I get to design and help people to implement standards and technology that changes lives.  The impact is huge.  Many years ago, I used to develop software that was used by just about everyone (spelling correction), and is still in use around the globe.  That’s not nearly as interesting as working on standards for healthcare.  If I do my job right, millions (even billions) of people will live longer and healthier lives.  Who cares about a few spelling mistakes when you can have that kind of impact.

What are you doing to “hack” health care?

Whatever I can.  I write code, comment on federal regulations, teach standards, and even blog about them (almost daily).

Why are you attending HealthCamp Boston?

I know several of the people who are attending, and I’ve heard of many others.  I expect it to be quite an innovative group of people, and I hope to get some interesting insights.

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

Either IT Standards, or the new Meaningful Use rules.

What kinds of people do you want to meet at HealthCamp?

New ones.

Who is coming to #HCbos? Harris Lygidakis

Harris Lygidakis (twitter, website) is coming to HealthCamp Boston.

Hi, Harris! Please tell us a little about your day job

I am a General Practitioner / Family Physician (GP/FP) and work as a locum doctor in severalPrimary Care practices in Bologna, Italy. Besides my clinical work, I have been involved indifferent research projects.

What are you passionate about?

What I am really passionate about is technology and its phenomenal ways of integrating it in healthcareachieving better and equal health for everybody. In particular, I am really excited about mHealth, as well as the new possibilities of patient empowerment that are being madepossible thanks to technology and the Internet. It is fascinating how the constant flow of information from patients, healthcare professionals, sensors and devices is determining a radical change in the way we are delivering healthcare. As General Practice / Family Medicine (GP/FM)is perhaps the clinical specialization most affected by social changesfeel as the middleman between people and medicineand this gives me a unique overview of the transformation that technology is triggering.

What are you doing to “hack” health care?

Although there are plenty of groups and associations that conduct research in Primary Care in my geographical areathe lack of GP/FM University Departments has made large-scale and well-organized research truly challenging. Since college, I have been working in different research projects, the majority of which has been carried out by smaller independent teams of GPs/FPs. The insight into the difficulties that these teams must overcome has been a lesson of great educational value for me.

Moreover, it is really intriguing how diverse the European context is. As a matter of fact, Primary Care could be compared to the Tower of Babel, made of different healthcare systemsplenty oforganizational models and a variety of individual, community and administrative issuesIn this context, GPs/FPs are the common denominator and many of them would like to contribute in research and provide their data from their catchment areas.

Research is not only about white, relatively healthy males from urban cities. In a varied context, we have the opportunity to explore the different conditions and needs of the populations of asmall isolated village in Romania and a rural area in Norway and compared them with those ofbig urban centers such as London and Madrid.

The idea to build a platform for collaborative research was born out of this experience. I have had the opportunity to work with two engineers, Silvio Cambiaso and Nicola Masella, to develop such a platform with the objective to enable teams of researchers and clinicians, as well as institutes and associations, to establish collaborative projects. Our team would like to tackle other issues of the research process and encourage more researchers to engage and participate actively. Perhaps even research can be more social and a crowdsource model may be applied, while maintaining itsacknowledged and professional profile.

Why are you attending HealthCamp Boston?

It’s actually my very first time in a HealthCamp. I have found out about its very interesting program thanks to Twitter and, as I am attending the Medicine 2.0 Congress, I instantly decided to participate in the HealthCamp as wellWe are living a revolution in healthcare, so I am very excited to be with people who breathe the same air and I am looking forward to listening to their perspectives, experiences and insights.

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

I would be interested in exploring ways to improve the research process and collaboration especially in primary care settings. Moreover, I would be keen in exploring mHealth applications for sectors such as alcohol and smoking interventions.

What kinds of people do you want to meet at HealthCamp?

This must be a brilliant opportunity to meet all types of people; from Healthcare professionalsand key opinion leaders to policy makers and patients.

Who is Coming to #HCBos? Lisa Gualtieri!

Dr. Lisa Gualtieri (twitter, blog) will be attending HealthCampBoston 2012! She was kind enough to answer a few questions for us:

Hi, Lisa! Please tell us a little about your day job.

I am Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. I recently taught the medical school’s first online course, which was on Mobile Health Design. That and my other courses are all at the intersection of technology and health communication.

What are you passionate about?

Teaching, writing, swing dancing, and, most recently, running. I have been running for 4 weeks and my longest run so far was 40:04. I have my sights on a 5K. I tried 2 running apps, by the way, but didn’t find them helpful.

What are you doing to “hack” health care?

I design apps or redesign existing apps to improve them. I try to think creatively about how apps can help people achieve their health goals. I even submitted an app to the Surgeon General’s App Challenge. It didn’t win but I enhanced it and submitted it to Mayor Menino’s App Challenge. Cross your fingers!.

Why are you attending HealthCamp Boston?

I have never been to a HealthCamp before so wanted to try it.

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?

My session would be about mobile app design. I would focus on how apps can be better integrated into daily life and the roles of evidence-based medicine and big data in helping people achieve their health goals. Or I would lead a session on improving how people locate health apps and the rating and review process.

What kinds of people do you want to meet at HealthCamp?

I am especially interested in talking to people who share my interest in health apps!

Thanks, Lisa! We’re looking forward to seeing you in September!
