Preparing for the Code-a-thon

When you participate in a Code-a-thon it is important to come prepared. Here are some tips that can help you get ready:

  • Make sure your laptop battery is charged. We will be providing power strips but sometimes you want to huddle with other team members and power may not be immediately available at he spot you choose for your huddle.
  • Check that you have all the software that you need.
  • If you want to use a FHIR Server or Client software you might want to download it before the event and work through any configuration issues.
  • Pack a hotspot or check your smartphone’s personal hotspot is configured. HHS and 1776DC provide guest WiFi but you might find that certain services blocked. eg. port 22 for connecting via SSH in to a cloud service to configure a machine.

Two days can fly by very quickly. It can be useful to meet as a team prior to the code-a-thon and work out roles (You don’t all have to be developers!). Roles that you may want to fill on your team:

  • Project Coordinator
  • UI/UX
  • coder (database and backend)
  • coder (front-end)
